Many private and public institutions provide education in Omaha. Omaha Public Schools runs the city's largest public school district and is the largest school district in Nebraska with over 45,000 students within over 75 schools. There are more than 10 colleges, universities, trade, and specialty schools in the Omaha metro area.
The Nebraska State Legislature recently approved a controversial plan to split Omaha into three distinct "learning communities" with a central administrative board. The plan relies on dividing Omaha Public Schools according to racial composition, with Caucasian students predominately attending a West Omaha learning community, Hispanic/Latino students in South Omaha and African American students in North Omaha.
